Sensei Simone 5th Dan our technical director will teach a 3 day course in Kilkenny and Waterford Dojo. During these three days we will cover the basics of Takemusu Aikido offering an insight into this approach.

Takemusu Aikido has a strong emphasis on weapons work in coherence with our paired and solo practices, it gives the practitioner a wide grounded understanding of Aikido by building up a solid foundation of basics. When absorbed these basic principles can open up the student to Aikido as Budo…

Training is always conducted in a serious and yet relaxed atmosphere. As such beginners are welcome as are students of other martial traditions. There will also be a social side to this course with at least one event of food and music probably in Thomastown on the Saturday night.

Demo in Windgap, Co. Kilkenny

On Friday 4th April Joseph Kennedy and Kieran Nipress gave a Demo of  Takemusu Aikido and Katori Shinto Ryu to the Windgap Youth Club. There where about 40 kids present and several adults. When we arrived the kids where running all over the place and yelling. Just generally being kids. They did however in all fairness sit down and stay more or less quiet while we showed them what we do. I gave a brief talk about Aikido and why I do it, and the kids listened responsively.  They where especially attentive when I took out my Iaito and showed the Iaijutsu of Katori Shinto Ryu. The demo concluded and we invited the children up two at a time to have a go at the shihonage throw. Me and Kieran must have taken ukemi 100 times on that cold hard floor. All part of training I supposed. We finished with everyone standing doing some Kiai’s. Hope fun was had by all and thanks to Liz Jackson for the invite.20140404_162132

Takemusu Aikido Ireland Spring Course Thomastown and Waterford Sensei Simone Chierchini

Another weekend of throws, pins, cuts and rolls, some Kokyu breathing, then off to the pub.

Putting it so simply hardly gives it justice. This seminar was interesting on too many levels to mention. Sensei Simone’s ability to explain and demonstrate both technique and principle is remarkable. The adaptability of Takemusu Aikido and the sure scope of content could leave many confused. Fortunately for us Simone is able to put into words and show things in such a way that our beginners can understand and improve their own Aikido.

This seminar was held in 2 locations. We started on Friday with a short class in our Waterford Dojo. Sensei Simone emphasised flow and flexibility and covered about 4 techniques. He spoke about the important of being able to perform a technique from many different situations and the mental state required to do so.

The next day we trained in the beautiful hall of Camphill Jerpoint, Thomastown. Sensei Simone started a class with a Kokyu session. Kokyu exercises are a kind of breathing movement mediation similar to QiGong. We were also fortunate to be able to listen to Phillip Cullen playing the piano during this. After lunch we trained in Bukiwaza {weapons} , covering the sword katas of Iwama Ryu. This is a wonderful way to train. Not only are the katas interesting by themselves but also in relation to the Empty handed Aikido. Sensei Simone always likes to explain the close relation between armed and unarmed technique.

On Sunday we returned to our Waterford Dojo. There we continued with a simple series of technique in an almost kata like fashion. Focusing on flow and then returning to more basic kihon practice we were able to both capture the basic principle and to look into other possibilities. Our Bukiwaza was Jo {staff}. We learnt a short kata and went over the basic suburi exercises. Our course finished with a grading ceremony. The first students of Waterford Dojo received their 5th Kyu.

Thanks to Camphill Community Jerpoint and Black Belt Academy Waterford for hosting the event.

We hope to have Simone back this Summer.

Uchideshi Program at Aiki-En Italy

IMG_1639

In the troubled times we are living in, Aiki-En Italy is a project that offers its participants the experience of an alternative lifestyle built on Budo. Aiki-En Italy gives us an opportunity to live together in the name of Aikido, sharing an experience based on its principles of peace, harmony and mutual collaboration.

Aiki-En Italy is not only a martial arts project, but also a social and ecological concept. At Aiki-En Italy we strive to live in a sustainable and self-sufficient way, joining our passion for Aikido training with pleasant work in the garden, growing vegetables, tending fruit trees and taking care of courtyard animals. The daily practice of Aikido is blended with agriculture, family life and grounded feeling.

Aiki-En Italy enrolees are live-in students (uchideshi) that live with the teacher and his family, as opposed to the external students (sotodeshi) that only come to train but live outside the Dojo. The unique experience of being an uchideshi implies that the student is not only doing Aikido on the mats, but also living it together with the teacher, his family and other enrolees, like an Aikido family.

Time spent as an uchideshi is characterised by the creation of a special bond between sensei and student. Besides studying in depth the basics of the Art, the uchideshi gets to be exposed to the specific background knowledge of Aikido and its application in everyday’s life: traditionally, in fact, every part of the life of an uchideshi was part of the training itself.

Nowadays, taking part in a uchideshi program suits those that feel the need to step back from their normal routine for a while, it is also an ideal solution for those who want to undergo a period of intensive quality training, or simply having a holiday out of the ordinary. At Aiki-En Italy we wish to support people in their quest for achieving mastery of the Art, gaining/regaining personal balance and finding a new positioning in personal life.

At Aiki-En Italy, uchideshi practice Aikido daily—normally two classes per day plus special impromptu sessions. Uchideshi training does not begin or end with practising Aikido as the live-in students also share in performing various duties, going from Aiki-En maintenance to working in the garden and contributing their skills at special once-off projects.

Uchideshi usually develop their Aikido skills very quickly, at the same time learning how to manage themselves, people and situations. The challenge of becoming an uchideshi is one that must not be taken lightly. Accepting this responsibility will lead to valuable personal development through training, a process that is priceless in everyday’s life.
